The CCMA hosts many events, exhibitions and classes throughout the year.

  • August 7-September 5: Moving On sculpture installation

Moving On is a site installation created by Barbara Cohen. This kinetic art piece features a conveyor belt with a canvas duck surface that rotates at two revolutions per minute. A one- or two-layer application of spherical graphite drawings (ping pong balls) covering the conveyor is held in place by a four-inch Plexiglas rail. Slowly evolving before the viewer, the top layer turns counter to the bottom layer in a series of repetitive movements that track Cohen's nervous system. The moveable belt on the installation changes the layout of the "drawing".
  • August 14-October 10: Glass Transformed, Celia Pearson exhibition

Photographer Celia Pearson will give a Gallery Talk and PowerPoint presentation about Glass Transformed, her exhibition which opens the same day. Sea glass is the inspiration for this exhibit. The artist will talk about her passion for observation, the lure of sea glass; and the particular challenges of photographing these forms.

The talk is free with paid museum admission. Nationally known and a life-long photographer, Celia Pearson's photographs in the book Pure SEA GLASS. (Sea Glass Publishing, 2004) have drawn praise from art collectors and sea glass lovers alike. The prints in the exhibit in Dennis are some of the best examples of the artist's body of work on this subject.

Alchemy of Murder book cover

Local writer Carol McCleary will discuss her latest book, Alchemy of Murder. The book will be available for sale through the courtesy of Titcomb's Bookshop.

Alchemy of Murder, a novel, begins with a very short history of Nellie Bly's background, but the mystery begins when Nellie has herself committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. This commitment was the start of Bly's career. But for the reader, it's the start of Nellie's efforts to find a killer. While on the island, she learns that women are going missing and no one seems to care, thinking they probably died while trying to swim the river to escape. Alchemy of Murder has been sold in eight countries, with a second printing in Australia, and was a finalist for the International CrimeFest Sony Award in Europe.

Ovarian Cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, in part because the symptoms are so vague. It was diagnosed in more than 21,000 woman in the United States in 2009 and killed more than 15,000. Although ovarian cancer is a relatively rare disease, it touches many lives - husbands, children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends. Unfortunately, due to its subtle symptoms and rarity, most women know little or nothing about ovarian cancer. Whether you already have ovarian cancer, know someone who does, or have been fortunate thus far to not be touched by this disease, knowledge about the disease is a powerful tool. We encourage all women to learn about this disease, and to tell their friends and family and co-workers. Due to the almost silent nature of its symptoms, it is said that ovarian cancer whispers. This makes it all the more important for all of us to know what to listen for and how to listen. Ovarian cancer whispers....so listen!!
